Just finished this blog header for Janel over at “Run With Scissors” (CLICK HERE to see the real deal). In addition, I designed a web banner for her fans to embed on their blogs, etc. I’m pretty happy with it. If anyone is interested in hiring me to design your blog header, hit me up. What better way than to celebrate Christmas than with free stuff. My wife and I are teaming up for a give-away. I’ll be designing a free custom blog header to a random commenter. I threw together this little t shirt design yesterday for my boy Luke who plays drums for FE. He’s an incredible drummer but he also loves fishing. A little joking turned into brainstorming and eventually a brilliant idea. The color looks a little funky in this version, but you get the idea. Look for Luke to be wearing this bad boy soon a stage near you…

As far as jazz records go, my all-time favorite easily goes to my favorite trumpeter, Lee Morgan for his most famous recording, The Sidewinder. And… um… I just saw it listed on the $5 December specials on Amazon.com. If you like jazz, do yourself a favor, CLICK HERE AND DOWNLOAD IT.

My band, Fundamental Elements is in Nashville recording our new project this week. We try to document as much as we can with our handy Flip Cam. My documentary objective this week: tell the story of our studio experience using clips of 5 seconds or less. Should be good for all you A.D.D. kids out there who can’t hang with those long boring videos. It should be pretty cool. I’ll post when it’s finished…

This year I made the last-minute decision to take orders for Christmas cards which were custom designed to look like vintage jazz record covers… kind of a way to combine my love and experience with album art with a fun holiday tradition. Each family received a completely unique design. It was a clever idea, I thought, and I think it provided a fun and fresh way to do holiday cards with a lot of character and personality. I had quite a few orders come in, especially on such short notice. I think they turned out pretty well. I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback as well as requests from lots of people to post them online so everyone can see the results. [SPOILER ALERT] The cards were two-sided, but here’s a look at some of the front cover designs…

Thanks to everyone who ordered. I plan to do them again next year and will begin taking orders in early fall, so stay tuned. Spread the word!

I love album cover art. So as a tribute, I’ve decided to start sharing some favorites each week. To kick things off I’ll give you a look at one of my favorite designs by a team of guys who are easily my biggest influence: Reid Miles & Francis Wolff, who designed hundreds of album covers for the Blue Note jazz record label. This is the cover for Freddie Hubbard’s record Hub-Tones. Great stuff.
